A trade-in is when the dealer selling you your next car buys your current one as part of the deal. It is quick and simple, but the dealer allows for reconditioning, holding costs and margin, so the trade price is below private sale.

Ask for the replacement car's drive-away price and your trade-in value as separate written figures. Subtract the trade-in value from the drive-away price to compare the changeover on the same car.
If you still owe finance, account for the payout separately. A high trade-in offer can look appealing while leaving you with a larger total cost. Compare the final amount you need to pay or finance before deciding.
